Münnerstadt is a city in Lower Franconia on the river Lauer. The place was of great importance under the Carolingians. In 1156 the Cistercian monastery Bildhausen was built just outside the town. Under the Counts of Henneberg, it developed into a city with four gate towers, three of which are still standing today.
