Bad Neustadt an der Saale is located on the Franconian Saale on the edge of the Bavarian Rhön. From 790 a Pfalz (royal palace) was built for Charlemagne in the present district of Salz, in 1232 a “nova civitas” is mentioned. Today Bad Neustadt is best known for the Rhön-Klinikum and the heart-shaped medieval city walls.
