Hammelburg lies at the river Saale and is the oldest wine town in Lower Franconia and among the 30 oldest cities in Germany. In 777 a.d. it was endowed to the Princely Abbey of Fulda by Charlemagne. Today the city is known for the military base “Camp Hammelburg”, the Monastery Altstadt and Castle Saaleck.
